580 Hayes Elder Art Park

UPDATE: August 2010

Unfortunately this property has new owners, who have said NO to our pleas to keep our “Elder Art Park”. They would rather have a parking lot!

We expect to move Kitty Gordon’s “Flower Spiral” and Mark Baugh-Sasaki’s “Adaptations” to The Hayes Valley Farm….located on old freeway land, Laguna / Octavia and Fell / Oak: www.hayesvalleyfarm.com

The “Art Wall “ will stay ! Please drop by, sit on a car hood and enjoy the art wall !

Sculpting with the harsh material of glass and creating a fluid presence inspires my artistic path. Luminescent hues that change with light breathing life into my work. Glass as an artistic medium has always satisfied a dangerous glee in me... literally playing with broken glass to create my sculptures and stained glass windows. Glass is a resilient material able to weather centuries of time yet it is fragile to the touch and can be easily destroyed. It is glass' fragile nature and beauty that I exploit in my work, using chaotic shards of glass to manipulate and cover surfaces. Glue acting as a primordial ooze holds the glass to the surface, establishing an entanglement of process and product creating a new form full of individual spirit retaining the essence but not the function of it's past incarnation.

"Flower Spiral", originally designed for display at Phish Festival 8 in Indio, CA in October 2009, is made almost entirely of recycled materials and found objects. This plant-like sculpture symbolizes growth and rebirth, giving a new purpose and life to what was previously discarded. The end result is an organic and natural-looking form born from man-made and unnatural materials.

Many people have long understood the benefits of recycling. Over the past generation we have all become increasingly aware of its importance. We have evolved into a nation that cares about and encourages recycling and, more importantly, reuse. Reuse is a great practice because it does not generally require additional resources or expense unlike recycling which involves processes that break down used items into raw materials that can then be made into something else. The possibilities of reuse are endless. "Flower Spiral" gives us an understanding of the potential for reuse and inspires us to, at the very least, think differently about the things we idly toss out.

Materials - Steel, Rebar, Bottle Caps, Other Recycled Metal

Even though we are in the very beginning stages, we are super excited to be creating an Art Park at 580 Hayes @ Laguna. Thanks to the property owners, Age Song / Pacific Institute, owners of two senior care facilities in Hayes valley.

We have installed Mark Baugh-Sasaki's "Adaptations" which had been at our park, Patricia's Green in Hayes valley. With it's installation period ending at the park, we are happy that it has a new home.

This lot / art park, will be a mixed use lot consisting of outdoor dining for the "coming soon " restaurant, Hayes and Kabob, as well as public space, one or two more art installations and wall murals / mosaics.....all by local artist.

We will post more photos as the park takes shape. It is hoped that the park will look fairly complete in about a month or so.

The property is donated, but we do need to raise funds to cover installation and mural costs !! Please donate here online or send a cheque to The Hayes Valley Art Coalition, 568 Hayes Street, SF , Ca 94102

ANY amount if of great help and will be acknowledged on our website.
